The mast is installed on top of the base and works in coordination with the drilling rig, used to mount the traveling block, hoisting system, and perform tasks such as raising and lowering drilling tools, handling casings, and managing downhole incidents.

Masts come in different types, including A-type, K-type (front-opening type), tower-type, and pole-type:

The A-type mast has a rectangular or triangular cross-section in the large leg, offering good load-bearing capacity and local stability. Sections are connected with pins, and the mast is installed at a low position, utilizing a truss structure to rely on winch power for lifting.

The pole-type mast tilts towards the wellhead during operation and uses rope tension to maintain stability and bearing capacity.
